9 Miles Were Conquered
I did it, painfully, but I did it. I decided to take advantage of the beautiful day and tried running at the Katie Trail. The gravel was much easier on my knees, but harder on the soles of my feet. At mile 8 I thought I couldn't go any further, but somehow managed to get in the last mile. I'm glad that's over! I still can't imagine doing 13 but I'm hoping the excitement and adrenaline will get me through.
For some reason the first 3 miles are always the hardest for me. I guess it takes that long for my body to warm-up. I know I need to stretch more.
Anyway, be sure to post how your run goes this weekend. Sarah - 9 pounds is awesome! Way to go! We're looking forward to seeing everyone Sunday. I was thinking of bringing that rice, bean, feta cheese dish. Will that work? I think we'll try to make it there for 10:30 church in Centralia. Love you all! Can't wait to see your ring, Alicia and see Nora's pictures.
Nora - we've been watching "Ever After" every day since we got it.
We're praying for Grandma Borhart.
Love you!

So, after two weeks on the disabled list, I ran today. I had to take Will with me, but he didn't make a peep the whole time, good little boy! I went the five miles, but I think I only ran about 4 1/2. My knees were really starting to kill me toward the end. I'm gonna try to be in the best shape I can for the race!
I've now lost 9 pounds since starting WW. It's pretty exciting, and I really think I can reach my goal. Keep on pluggin!! Love!

Sarah
Well, down 7 pounds since I started WW. I've been doing okay, but I need to get strict with not eating this and that here and there. Those little bites add up to major points, I'm sure. Plus, I'm still icky sick, so have not been able to run for the past week. I was hoping I'd be able to today, but I just can't breathe worth a dime. Conjestion in nose and lungs is horrible, and this cough is hanging on pretty good. I'll run as soon as I can, but I'm bracing myself for the possibility that I might have to run/walk the half-marathon. Darn getting sick!! Praise the Lord for Audrey's quick recovery today. I'm so glad she's alright. Hopefully tomorrow she'll show no signs at all! I'm looking forward to Easter with everyone. What fun! Alicia, tell us about this house you're looking at. House hunting is so fun, and it's a great time to buy! Love!

Mom
How did you do this week, Sarah? We have an "ice" day today. It's nice to watch the morning light appear and not have to scrape car windows etc. Will I get the tax "sorting" done today? One of life's necessary evils, I guess. I ended up leaving my second tutoring student after only about 5 minutes because it was starting to ice up. I'm glad I did. Crazy weather. I'm now at 93 hours at the center. It seems that it is taking FOREVER to get to 100. Looking forward to being able to spend time with Will, Anna and Audrey this weekend, weather permitting. At least we know it has to end soon. The ice on the trees certainly is beautiful, though. Love to you all. Mom And yes, I am going to exercise now. Although, I can't do the step ups on both steps anymore. My left knee gives too much pain. I've started to just use the low step, or do squats and forgo that part all together. That's the knee I hurt in the car accident. Maybe I'll end up with a knee replacement like my parents one of these days. Thank God for the option. Mr. Crouse recently had a knee replacement. I guess this was his last year heading up the state tournament, so it was extra meaningful for him to be able to present our girls with the championship trophy. The last time Centralia's girs won was 1990, when Stephanie Meadows was on the team (Laura's class), and now this year Danielle Meadows was. She's a 7th grader, and made the all tournament team. Wish I had gone up for the final, triple overtime game.

Way to go Sarah! You can do it. Glad WW is working out well. I didn't get my exercise in this morning, and I can tell the difference. Love you all!

Sarah
Well, as of today, my official weigh-in day, I've lost 4.4 pounds. Not the 6 it showed on Saturday, but still pretty good for my first week. I'll definitely keep it up. I'm trying to get pumped for the running this week, but this weather makes it so hard! I think I'm gonna have to run my 4.5 at the Y today, which is no fun on a treadmill. Hope everyone has a great week! Love!

Mom's mumblings
Sounds like you girls are really getting into it. Dad is calling everyone to cancel the Springfield tournament. Maybe if the weather breaks like it should we could get together to do the bracelets this weekend. Or, I could pick up what's needed when I go to tutor Monday, and then have my class make them on Tuesday. Good idea to take a video, and then have it available for the kids to see.
I was hoping to visit my cousin near Springfield, but she said Sat. wouldn't have been good because today (Fri.) is her first chemo. She found out the cancer is in her bones as well as her liver, kidney and lungs. She has 18-24 months to live. Man. She's younger than Aunt Karen. Pray for her.
I'm dying to know what Julie had. There have GOT to be pictures and info. on the Borhart site today. I think I told everyone but Nora that Aunt Ann had emailed me that Julie had mild pre-eclampsia, risk of infection from broken water, contractions that wouldn't stop so the cervix could dilate, epidurals that were moved and resulted in major pain, 3 days of contractions, followed by 3 hours of intense pushing, followed by a C-section, followed by threats of an emergency hysterectomy and blood transfusion. Ann said she hadn't slept in many hours, but all seemed to be fine now. The baby was a champ, and in the end, the worry was about Julie's condition, rather than the baby's. I'm guessing it's a boy, because Ann referred to the baby as a "champ". Isn't God awesome, though? I'll let you know when I know more of the story.
I didn't want to go into all the detail on the Harm site because Angie is only weeks away from delivery herself.
I'm sorry that Alicia has gotten that rotten cold.
Love you all!

Did my 4 miles yesterday, and it's so nice to only have 2 today. Weidht watchers is going pretty well. I've gone over by a couple points, but I'm not worried cause I've got alot of activity points. This should really help me take control of my eating. Remember, Marathon movie is tomorrow at 7:30. Laura wants to come...anyone else? Love!

WOO HOO!!
I just ran my six miles in 55.48 minutes! It felt great. That garmin is absolutely amazing because I just ran all over town! I wasn't even really winded. My breathing felt great... the only thing is my knees and hips were a little sore during the last mile or so but other than that it was perfect. I love that running has become part of my life now. Thanks for getting us to do this, Laura!
Nora Here
Hey guys.
Yeah, I have been slacking big time lately... since I haven't been consistent with my three short runs with a long run on the weekends I have been doing longer runs when I actually go out. I ran 5 miles later last week and I will run 6 miles today. I've been pleasantly surprised at how I feel when I do the long runs though. I'm really into the groove of longer distance running now. It feels good. This past weekend was a BLAST in Annapolis. That town is amazing and it was awesome hanging out with Jamie and Tyler's friends... Weird visiting Annapolis without Tyler though... I'll see him in 18 days in Honduras!
Speaking of Honduras, Tyler asked if we would like to make those "Jesus story" bracelets to give to the kids in Honduras. I don't remember if I talked to everyone about that or not. Would you guys want to get together sometime this weekend and make a whole bunch? Mom said her class could do some as well... how cool! I think it would be great to get pictures and video of my mission group giving these bracelets to the kids and letting everyone who helped make them see the effect it had on people. Also, Tyler just put another post on his website,
http://tyler.star-fish-enterprises.org/
I really felt moved by this last post he made. He really has a way with words and he is becoming extremely attached to the people of Honduras.. it really showed with this post. Anyway, I don't know if you guys have been able to look at his website at all but seeing all the pictures and his writings is so cool. I like to think he's doing this mission for all of the people who wish they could do it but can't for various reasons. Anyway, check it out if you want and pray for his safety always!
A funny story he told me about being there... if you see a picture of him with four young Honduran girls, he says they remind him of what the Harm girls were probably like. He said they just HUNG on him all day and were playing and joking with him. They were the cutest things ever but SO overwhelming and he said he felt for dad because he imagined that's probably what we were like at some point in time! Just thought that was funny... anyway, love you guys and let me know about making those bracelets this weekend! I'll find out my work schedule and plan for a time to either go to Laura's or whatever. KEep up with the running... Sarah is right, Florida is coming FAST! We gotta start incorporating pilates into our workouts... or yoga, just something to help tone. Love ya!

Mom again
I use Alicia's portable. I could help sew sometime. That's great that a lady commented on it. I think it's a great idea!
Sarah
Just finished 4 miles, and it seems to be getting harder instead of easier...go figure. Still have a 6 miler tomorrow. All this running and I haven't lost a pound, although my diet is still bad as all get out, and I haven't been doing any other workouts. Florida is steadily approaching...will I be able to wear a swimsuit?!?!? AAAAAHHHHHHHH! Alicia, if you want to run outside, the garmin will really help. I got one that has a watch and foot pod that you attach to your shoe. The foot pod tracks your distance, speed, and a bunch of other things that I don't use, so you can just run without having to first plan your route. I think I ordered it on amazon...it ended up being about $130 with shipping. But I really like it. Way to go on your final, mom! That's awsome that you're almost done with your training and then you can start getting paid! We're going over to Laura's tomorrow for church and then Laura and I are going to try to get more material to make some more poncho-blankies. I was putting Will's back on him as we left Kohl's yesterday, and a woman commented on how neat it was. I said, "Actually, I made it." (Even though Laura really did) And I wished I had a business card with our online store on it to give her! Hey, mom and Alicia, don't you guys have sowing machines? Wanna bring em over and put em to use?! Love!
Mom
I hope you all had a "love filled" Valentine's Day. Thanks you for the cards and phone calls. I'm sticking with alternating the 5 Firm Videos. I just have them lined up in order next to the VCR, and put the one I just completed on the right, and grab the one furthest left. I feel so much stronger. I haven't done my 3 day diet for awhile, but haven't GAINED any weight. Have any of you seen the "balancing stick" ( or whatever it's referred to ) for the Firm? I just use my swiffer, which is fine for balance, but doesn't have the "twigs" to take off on the ends, and isn't weighted really. I looked at Target in the exercise dept., but didn't see one. Maybe I just have to order it online....Laura, I hope you have your strength back again soon. Being sick can really set you back regarding exercise. I had 4 of my students out several days last week. It turns out that one has the chicken pox for the 2nd time...very rare. Have Audrey, Anna and Will had that chicken pox vaccine, or do they get that when older? I remember that all four of you had them when Nora was less than a month old. Alicia, you can get back on track. I know you can. What does the garmen watch do? Do you have to "click" it everytime you run a certain distance or something? I'm just asking. Since I don't "run", I wouldn't use one myself. Sarah and Nora, keep up the good work....take your mace when running the trail. Hey! I got an A on my final. Now all I have to do is tutor 16 more hours, write one more book report and do a write up on one of my students to submit to the head office. The other two girls who started with me have already complete their 100 hours because they have 3 students each at the center. I got a "save the date"to Heidi and Nate's wedding. It's on July 12th....that's our first day at Camp Arcadia, right? Alicia, it would be so great if you could somehow manage to go with us. There will be plenty of room in the cottage we have. I'm excited! Love to all. Mom Keep praying for Julie....could be any time now.

HAPPY VALENTINES DAY!!!!!
I've been kind of avoiding this site lately because I've really been slacking. So I really just need to get back into the groove! It's been hard with all of the bad weather and everything. I think I'm going to buy one of those garmen watches because doing all of the running I can outside I think will be the best bet! I just really hate running inside! I hope all of you have a great day!!! Love you all!

Hello Ladies! Nora here
Hey guys!
Well the running over in Edwardsville has been going pretty well. Both Sarah and I didn't do our run yesterday but we each ran 3 1/2 miles today. It gets easier and easier every single time. It's amazing! Our 5 mile on Sunday was great. We used Sarah's watch garmin and it was great. The bike trails in E-ville weren't cleared off so we just ran through tons of streets around her house! Being able to run WHEREVER with that garmin is so cool. Much easier than the bike trail I think... because you can go wherever you want. I will also have all of you know that Sarah thought it was insane that Laura and I ran a consistent 10 minute mile the previous week BUT we ran 5 miles in 50 minutes!!! 10 minute mile again and we weren't winded! It felt so good.
Alicia, how are you doing??? I know it's gotta be hard getting up and running early in the morning. Sarah and I gave up the 5:30 am thing pretty much because it was way to hard. We just go later. Even if you're not doing running, are you able to do some elptical or somethin else at that gym in town? Love you!!!

Okay, sorry for my brain fart, but we're not supposed to do the 5k until week 6. My bad. Just another 5 miles this weekend!
Sarah
Running has been going pretty well. Nora and I ran our 5 miles yesterday, and it felt so good to finish it! This week instead of our long run we're supposed to do a 5k race, and it just so happens that there's one in Forest Park this weekend. Nora's looking into the details, so we should do it if everyone's free. Have a great week! Love!

Mom again
Today we got a postcard from TuTu's sister, Margie Abbott. A Kelly-McCoy Reunion is being planned for Sunday, Aug. 3 in Vermillion, South Dakota. There will be a catered meal. It says to please mark your calendar and that an informational/RSVP letter will be sent out at a later date. There's a note to *Cousins: please inform your grown children as we do not have their addresses. (hence this note to you all) The contact persons are Nancy Abbott 605-665-0926 and Margie Abbott 605-665-3640. I wrote it on our calendar, but wanted to let all of you know, just in case you'd want to consider it.
Larry and Beth are here, and we've already had two games of pinocle. Larry and Dad are taking naps, Beth's watching the Young and the Restless, which Alicia recorded for her, and I'm on the computer(obviously). It sounds like Larry and Beth will leave for TN in the morning, so after I return from my hair apt. (it's a 7:30 apt.), we'd be free to come to Laura's. If Diane isn't leaving for the weekend, though, we'll probably stay put. So, just let us know. We do look forward to seeing the grandkids soon.
I'll see if I can get some of my lesson plans done. I'll do some grading now while the boys are resting. I haven't exercised for the last two days. Alicia's been sleeping on the floor in the living room, with Larry and Beth in her bedroom, so I haven't wanted to wake everyone up. I'll get back at it as soon as I can. I hope you are all able to keep up with your routines. I love you all. Mom.

4 miles in 40 minutes! That's so fast...good job, you guys! I just ran my 3.5 this morning. It was not fun. But at least the most we'll have to run during the week is 5. That's not so bad. I started my calorie counting yesterday and did okay. My goal is 1500 calories a day. With being so active, that should hopefully translate to about 2 pounds a week. We'll see! Alicia, how's your running going? You should come over on Saturdays and run the long ones with me. I don't go fast! Hope everyone is having a great week! Love!

Nora here
Well, Laura and I just ran our 4 miles in 40 minutes!!!! WOW, it felt good. Neither one of us felt like we had to stop the entire time. We both felt really good. We ran with Justin's wrist garmin which was really nice. The weather was absolutely incredible too. We ran in pants and t-shirts and it couldn't have felt better! We didn't even really break a hard sweat. It was awesome. When i go out to Annapolis the weekend after Valentine's day Jamie is taking me to Under Armour and she can get stuff with her discount. So, make a list for me! Love you guys!
It's amazing how this training really gets your body into shape. Love it!

Mom again
I sent the jogger's pepper spray with Nora for Sarah and Laura. Be sure to get yours and use it. Sarah, don't run the bike trail by yourself again please. Listen to your Mama!!! That goes for all of you, or at least if you absolutely HAVE to, take the pepper spray velcroed to your wrist and know how to use it. Laura, when is Diane coming to your house? It's 7:40, Nora just left and I still have to do "The Firm". The crazy pipe behind the dishwasher broke again (probably freezes), and we had water showering down into the big closet in the basement again...second time this week. Almost half of the ceiling tile in that closet was so soaked that it fell to the floor and broke all over the place. Fun fun!!! Love you all. Mom Our Lady Royals got 2nd place. Germantown was awesome, but we're very proud of our girls. Give the grandkids big hugs from Nana and Gramps!!!
Nora here
Wow! It's been so long since I've posted on here and there's so much to catch up on! First of all, I'm SOOOO excited about Camp Arcadia! Sarah and I looked at the website at all the pictures of the cottage. It will be so much fun. What an awesome, faith lifting experience that will be for everyone! Oh man, it's gonna be great. I told Laura this earlier... I think I can take care of the little ones for most of the nights so that all the couples can have some relaxing nights to themselves!! Fun!!
Laura, you are totally right about the running tips... my inner thighs are already starting to itch all the time. I assume it's because of all the rubbing and the dry weather. I have some Gold Bond lotion I will try to use every day but other than that, I dont' know. I always run in pants or capris because i can't stand the way shorts ride up on me. Is that better to have pants because the skin doesn't rub, or is that worse? Also, Jamie (Tyler's sister) can get Under Armour gear at a super good price with her discount and they have amazing workout gear. She said she is more than happy to get us all shirts for the race that we can have printed on. But, if you guys want any other material, let me know. I'm thinking about ordering some of the good, lightweight shirts. I'll have to browse the website. Just keep that in mind! Especially colors for the shirts we want. Sarah, how much was that watch? I would love to have a device to tell me how far I've run because then I could run ANYWHERE without having to track miles. Laura and I are going to run together tomorrow.. hopefully the weather is nice.
Laura, dedicating the race is SUCH an amazing idea. I'll have to think hard about who I want to dedicate it to. That is an amazing way to get motivated and make it special.
Okay, I know there's more stuff I need to talk about... but I can't remember. Basically, I've kept up with all the running... Tuesday I only ran about 2 1/4 miles because I had to get to student teaching and I couldn't shower at the Y like expected... I thought they had shower towels and they didn't. So, I had to leave early and run home to shower. Other than that, everything has been going smoothly! Can't wait to run tomorrow in a little warmer weather! Love you all so much! Keep focused! Two weeks down, ten to go!

The marathon movie is showing again on Thursday, Feb 21st, so hopefully we can get together and see it this time around. I'll go ahead and buy the tickets if anyone wants to commit now...they're $10 each.
I ran the 4 miles on the bike trail by myself this morning. No fun by yourself! I ordered a running watch that tells you your distance, pace, and all kinds of other crazy stuff, a bit unnecessary and pricey, but it'll really come in handy as we run the longer distances. So I'm excited about receiving that!
Dave will for sure be able to give us 2 of his buddy passes for $40 each round trip, and he'll probably be able to get more from co-workers, but they might be about $100 cause most people sell them to make money. But that's still at least half-price, so I'd say we're looking good. The only problem is that you have to use them stand-by, so we might not all be able to get on the same flight. We'll have to talk about that issue as the time nears.
Hope everyone is having a wonderful weekend! Love!

Mom
Well, I just finished my "firm" workout. I couldn't do it this morning, and wanted to stay with the program, so it's 8:38 on a Friday night, and I'm feeling great! I had to put some pictures up in the hall outside my classroom today, and got up on the black stool which we used to have at home...I climbed up and down it several times, and thought, "Wow! I wouldn't have been able to do this so easily had I not been using the fanny lifter every day! I'm so glad things are going well for you girls as well. Tomorrow our Lady Royals play for the championship in the class S state basketball game at Rend Lake. Danielle Meadows is a key player for them.
Sarah, I found the Camp Arcadia info exciting too. I talked with the gal at the Learning Center, and summer tutoring usually starts early July, but she said I could maybe start a week early (June 23rd) and then taking off July 12-19 wouldn't be a problem. So, both trips fit well into that schedule. Sarah $40/ person would be a terrific deal!
How are the grandbabies? I miss them all very much! Is everyone feeling better now? Much love to all of you and yours. Mom

Just got the Camp Arcadia stuff! How fun...we got the biggest cabin! I feel like we should have 10 more people going to get the most out of the space! I'm really excited for this adventure.
Nora and I were talking to my brother-in-law Dave today, he works for Southwest Airlines, and he may be able to get us buddy passes for $20 each! He gets so many a quarter, so we might be flying to and from Florida for $40! He's gonna look into it and find out exactly how it works. That would be awesome!
Ran my 3-2-3 so far this week, and will probably have to run the 4 on Sunday since Nora's going to Centralia tomorrow. So far so good. Let's keep up the good work!

Nora and I ran our three miles this morning because we slacked off yesterday and didn't do it. Hello week two!!! Thanks for the running tips, Laura. I know I don't have good running clothes, so I'll just have to pick things up as I go along. And what a good idea to dedicate your run. That will really keep you focused and give it all meaning. I'll have to think on that for myself for a while. Glad you enjoyed the books and now the movies...they're awesome! It really helps to read first with books and movies like these because the names and places are so hard to understand, and if you've read first, you know what they're talking about. Bummer you're not going to London, but it sounds like you made the best decision for yourselves. We'll come over and hang out to help with the girls so you can have a little break for a while!
Yay for Camp Arcadia! I am SO excited. I feel like it's been so long since I've been on a "real" vacation. Nora and I were talking about Florida, too, and we're looking at June 14-18. Nora has a summer class till the 13th, so that's why it would be later in June. Flights on Southwest right now are $102 one way, which I don't think is that bad. And actually, flights later in the evening are $89 if we really wanted to save a buck, but I'm more for convenience. Check it out and see what you think. Nora says they might do crazy deals at any time, but these prices are "online only" and don't last forever. So let's try to agree on what we want to do and get those tickets! Yay...what a FUN FUN FUN summer!!!

Camp Arcadia Here We Come!
We got in! I called them this morning. We're all set for the week of July 12-19. I forgot to ask if we're in the Inn or if we got the cottage, but they should be sending that info, soon.
We need to make plans for our Florida trip, too. Nora - what days do you want to go so we can start looking for plane tickets?
Here's the description of the Dean's program:
July 12 - 19, 2008
Family Week with Rev. Seidler and Craig Oldenburg
Theological Potpourri
All of us come with questions. Human beings are walking question marks searching for definitive answers. Sometimes those answers come. Sometimes the questions persist without end. The Body of Christ is called to be a place where questions, especially unanswered and apparently unanswerable ones, can be faced faithfully without fear. Come ready to learn, explore, risk, and be richly rewarded as we immerse ourselves in the wisdom and insight of God’s Word.
Scott Seidler, Kirkwood MO, Dean
Dr. Seidler serves as Senior Pastor of the Concordia Lutheran Church. Pastor Seidler’s personal mission in life is “to be a wise Christian man.” It is his firm conviction that “wisdom,” Biblically understood, is the key to abundant, missional living, and that this life is anchored to the One the Bible calls “the Wisdom of God,” Jesus Christ. Scott is committed to living wisely with his wife of twelve years, Renee, and his three children.
Experiencing Family: Living Faith in a Postmodern Perspective
What would our family structures look like if we thought of them like a mission base camp in another culture? Are you ready for an adventure? When realizing that culture is a variable in our lives and not a constant, it is tempting to build fences of protection – to build walls of protection from unknown dangers. How would we behave differently if the unknown was welcomed into our lives? What does living without fear look like? These sessions will examine Jesus’ call to his followers.

Laura Here
I'm so excited for everyone! Sounds like week one was a great finish for all of us! I ran my 4 miles at the park today. It was cold, but felt good to get that accomplished. Thanks for the tip about the incline on the treadmill, Nora. I went to Champs and got some gel insoles for my shoes that feel really good. They are $20 and worth every penny, I thought.
Just wanted to mention a few things that I you may know, but thought I'd share anyway. When you start running the longer distances, clothing choice becomes important because even lose comfortable shorts and shirts will rub your skin off after running many miles. I have a pair of running shorts with underwear built in them that I got a long time ago for long distances - just something to think about!
Also, I hope everyone knows how important it is to stay hydrated and breath in through your nose and out your mouth. Deep, relaxed breathing is key for those long distances! Just remember, if we do the training our bodies WILL be able to do the 13 miles - it's our minds that can ause the problems! So, I'm thinking of how I can dedicate this race to someone/something important to keep my mind off ME and on something else. Here's my thought. I'm going to dedicate this half-marathon to my four grandparents. Between the four of them, they've raised 14 kids and have how many grandchildren/great grandchildren? They've had hard, yet rewarding lives and are such wonderful role models. Who knows how much longer they'll be on this side of heaven and I want them to know how much they mean to me. So...I'm going to dedicate 3 miles to each one of them, with the first mile being dedicated to God, who gives us all our blessings. I thought I'd write a letter to each one and explain why I'm doing this and what it means. Then, when I'm running the miles, I can reflect on each of them and pray for them and my hope is that it will be a special thing for them and for me. I know it might sound corny, but I want to make this special.
Anyway, that's my idea. Are any of you dedicating this race to anyone/anything special? It's fun to think about!
Sarah - I can pay you our share of the furniture after February 8th when Justin gets his bonus. I'm not going to London. I sat down and figured out where we are financially and it's just not worth it to me to go more into debt for 3 days when Justin isn't even sure how much time he'd have available to spend with me. So, I'll just hang out here with the girls. I'm hoping for warmer weather, soon. I think we're all getting a little stir crazy.
I'm glad you are feeling better, Mom. Anna is doing better, but still very sick. Audrey started coughing and sneezing, so hopefully she doesn't come down with the same thing...I know it's miserable.
I'll have to talk to Justin about the movie this Thursday. That's the night before he leaves (I didn't realize that before), so I'm not sure what he'll want to do. We might just watch it at a theater over this way. We'll figure it out and let you know.
I just finished the final LOTR book - I've been addicted since getting them a week ago! WOW! I can't believe I never read them before. Now I'm going to watch the movies! Thanks for lending them to me, Sarah! Justin might take The Hobbit on his trip. He's never read them either.
Lots of love!

Good job, Alicia! Isn't it crazy that we ran 4 miles on our first week of training? We can definitely do this. I'm in for the movie this Thursday. That's me, Alicia, Laura, Justin? Mitch can watch the girls if you need him to, Laura. I'll buy the tickets online as soon as I know how many to get, so just let me know. I'm also gonna make a payment on the furniture this month, so if you want to, too, just get it to me by the end of January. Mom, your total is $407, and girls, our part is $263. The total is due May 20th, so just keep that date in mind. Laura, let us know how your run went today! Have a great week everyone! Love!
Alicia's 4 miles
Well, I did my 4 miles today here at the house on the treadmill. It wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. Mom found my shuffle, so that helped alot!!! I also covered up the area of the treadmill that shows how far you've gone. That helped because then I didn't know how much I had left to do, so I could just focus on the running and the music. I ran it at a pretty slow pace, but I didn't want to wear myself out too much too early. When I finally looked to see how much I had ran, I sped up for the last mile or so. I'm so proud of all of us!! I think I'll try that incline on Tuesday and see how it goes. Are we still going to that movie on Thursday? I have to go but I'll talk to you all later!!
Love Ya!

For the last 3 times I couldn't post a new one. This time I can. Keep up the day to day grind, ladies. It will be fun to do your run together. I'm feeling much better today than I have for the last 3 days. Poor little Anna. I KNOW how she feels, but she can't express it. Love you all.

Well, Nora and I did our 4 miles today. It was COLD, but we did it. It's alot different and harder outside than on the treadmill, so it's a good thing we'll be running that way once a week. So, week one is down...only 11 more to go! Love!

First Week Trainint (Nora)
Hey guys! I'm so proud of everyone for doing so well this week. Really, with this blog and a set schedule for training we should all have no problem keeping with it! It's so much easier when you know exactly what you will be doing at the Y and what days. This morning I ran my three miles and it was pretty good! I ran them in 32.25 minutes... I started out at a 5.2 pace and eventually worked my way up to 6.2 for the last couple minutes. It was really hard those last few minutes but I think I want to be able to run long distance at about a 5.7-5.8 pace. A little longer than 10 minutes per mile... actually I would love to be able to run the 13 miles in 130 minutes but we'll se how it goes! I've also decided to start running the treadmill on an incline. Tyler talked to me about the differences between running on a track/outside and running on a treadmill. It really makes sense... when you run on a treadmill, there are alot of muscles that don't get used because you do not push yourself forward. The treadmill is moving for you so the back of your thighs don't get as much work. Also, you don't use your core as much. I told him that for a while that was the way I wanted to do it for a while and asked if there was anything that could help. He did some research online and found that putting it on an incline is a really good way to get more of the outside running effect. So, I have just been putting my running on a 1.5-2.5 incline. I figure, any way to help me get used to outside running is worth a shot! So, if you guys want to try that go for it! I can't wait to hear how everyone's run goes this weekend. Alicia, I think Sarah and I are going to run the 4 miles tomorrow on the bike trail.. you are more than welcome to come join us! I don't know what time yet... not early because I have to work till 3 tinight. Love you all!
Running
Well, I ran the 3 miles yesterday. I'm a little nervous about the longer ones too. I can't wait until it gets nicer outside, because I'm really not a fan of running on treadmills. But for now I'll do what I have to. So far, it seems like we've all had a successful first week of training. Good job everyone!! I'll let you guys know how my 4 miles goes. I haven't decided if I'm going to do it on Saturday or Sunday. Good luck everyone!!! YOU CAN DO IT!!!

Laura's Success
Great job everyone with your first runs! Doesn't it feel good?!? I almost didn't get off to a great start. I stayed up late finishing The Hobbit and Audrey was up in the middle of the night, so when 6am rolled around I told Justin that I was going to run later. Then, as I lay in bed thinking of when I could run I decided that I needed to get up, so I did! I'm glad I did because Anna's cold is 10 times worse today. The poor thing is miserable, so I don't know if I would have been able to run had I not gotten up.
The pepper spray sounds like a good idea, mom. Keep it up everyone!!
Love you lots!

It's before 7:00 and I've already jogged 3 miles!!!
I don't know how long its been since I could say that! It does feel alot better to be done with it. I was definately not speedy. I finished in about 55 minutes. But I'm not doing this for time obviously. Thankyou mom for keeping my music motivating. I would get to running with the song and then the radio would go to talking or a really slow song. A necessity is definately making myself a play list. I decided to do today at home because I'm not sure how many people go up to the rec in the morning. If it's busy then there is a 20 or 30 minute time limit on all of the machines. I need one of those clicker things to help me keep track of my laps on the track if I run it there because 12 laps = 1 mile. So I try to keep track with my fingers, but 3 or 4 miles would get kind of tricky I do believe. The mace sounds like a good idea. Hope everyone else has a good day!! Love you all!

Laura: That's great that you decided to go to London. We could certainly be there for the weekend if Diane would like us to take part of the time period. I don't want to take anything away from her, but we'd love to help out.
Shannon Shipley had talked with Janet about jogging and mace. Anyway, Janet called me today to tell me that she can order at a discount if enough order. There are a couple of different kinds. One of them is just for joggers...it attaches with velcro, so it's easy to run with. I told her I'd get one for each of you girls as long as it's O.K. with you. Would Justin want one? The other sounds like a pocket sized one like Nora's. I want one like that to keep on my keychain for when I leave the Learning Center after dark. I mentioned it to Brenda, my teacher, and she wants one on a key chain too. Her only concern is that her son is a policeman who found out that's he's extremely alergic to something in the one he used in training, and he almost died from it. Janet said a policeman friend would be willing to meet with a group of ladies to explain how to use it, etc. What do you think?
Alicia, way to go! Good idea to join the Rec. Center where there's a track. I'm so excited for all of you! Lots of love, Mom.

My first workout of the new year!!!
Well, since I stayed over at Chad's I wasn't able to work out this morning. But I was so fired up after my post that I decided I was working out after work no matter what! So I brought all of my workout stuff with me after lunch. At the end of the day I went straight to work and went straight to the rec center. I signed up for a membership and biked 2 miles and ran one. I figured the rec center would be better than the body shop because I can use the track too. I'm not a huge fan of running on the treadmill. I felt so great when I was finished!!! I'm really getting excited about this. I'm going to get up early tomorrow and run my assigned run of 2 miles. I'm also doing it by the book.
That is so exciting that you're going to London!!! Everything will be fine. I just know you won't regret doing it. Keep up the good work everyone!!

Yay! I'm so excited for everyone. This morning was definitely an adventure, but it all worked out. Yes, Nora, get a new phone! Nora and I are doing our running on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. Those are the days we can go early to the Y. Alicia, you go girl. I know you will prove to yourself and everyone else that you can do this. It will be hard on your own, but we're here for you anyway you need us. And we'll be here for you when Chad's gone, too. Glad you liked using the steps, Mom. The Firm is such a good workout. And Laura, that is awesome that you're going to London!! I'm so jealous and happy for you! I'd be glad to go over and help Diane out anytime...just let me know. Hope everyone has a wonderful week! Love!
Way to Go
I'm so proud of everyone! We can all do this together! I'm doing the training by the book, so my runs don't start until tomorrow, but my plan is to get up at 6am and run before Justin leaves for work. I just think that will be the easiest.
Thanks for the shoe suggestion, Nora! I'm definitely going to need a new pair, soon. Way to go Sarah getting up so early and getting Nora there, too! Alicia, I'm sorry to hear about Chad but it sounds like you have a good attitude and that will make all the difference. He's such a sweetie for giving you that incentive! I KNOW you can do this!
Mom - good job losing 4 pounds already! I've already decided that I'm not going to watch the scale. For me this about doing the race and getting healthy. Shedding pounds will be a great added benefit...hopefully!
I think I'm going to go to the UK Friday, Feb 1- Tuesday, Feb. 5. I think Diane will be able to come. I hope she'll be ok with them by herself for that long. I'm excited...I think!
Love you all!!!

Mom here
I'm so proud of all of you. Alicia, I know you can do it. I'll encourage you however I can. I don't want you to get irritated with me, though, so you let me know how I can best help. That's so nice of Chad to give you an incentive. I'm sad that he'll have to go oversees, but it is a good thing that it won't be for an entire year. You're smart to make the most of the time until then.
Sarah and Nora: I'm glad Tyler knows a lot about running shoes. It won't take long to get them in the mail, and this way you know they'll be terrific shoes. Nora: If your phone is a continuing problem, maybe you should get a replacement. It's great that it worked out the way it did this morning. I'm proud of you both. Laura: How did your first day go? I hope Justin doesn't mind that it won't be just the two of you now. It might actually work out better, because you'll be able to trade off watching the kids on your long run days. It will be more fun posting on here, too, with you all having the same goal.
I did the aerobic and weight training FIRM again this morning. It was harder with the actual FIRM steps, but that's O.K. I appreciate you letting me use them, Sarah. I weighed in this morning, and was down to 152 on the school scale..down 4 1/2 pounds from last week. That always happens when I first get back on my 3 day diet. I'll be happy if I lose 1 lb/week. I figured that would get me where I want to be by May.
It was so great to see everyone yesterday. I love you all, and am so proud of each of you. Mom

Alicia's news....
That is AWESOME guys!!! It will definately help that you guys have eachother to work out with. When I got to Chad's I told him what I was planning on doing. His first reaction was that he didn't think I would keep up with the training. I was like where's the positive thinking?! He said well, I really hope you do and he thinks that I can, but he knows me and how I make all these goals for myself and then I give up really easily. So he gave me a little incentive. He told me that if I did all of the training and finished the race he would give me $100. But he is also going to be constantly on my case as to if I am really doing the training......which is a good thing. When I told Amber about it she had the same reaction!! But you know what? That is my reason for doing it. Everyone that I've told (I'm sure you guys too) knows me and has their doubts about me actually going through with this. So that is all the more reason to prove everyone else, myself included, wrong. I CAN DO THIS!!!! I think it will really make me feel good about myself. Which was really my goal for this year anyway. I know that I will probably have to work the hardest because I will basically be training on my own, but that will make the end that much more rewarding!! And I was thinking that for as many of the long runs as possible I was going to try to come over to Edwardsville anyway. Because those are the ones that I'm going to have the most trouble with. I'm actually really excited now! And I'm glad that we are all doing this together.
About Chad....
He is definately going now. They don't know exactly when, but it will be sometime this fall. Probably October or November. We will find out more about that as the year goes on. The good news is that he won't actually be over seas for a full year. The training, which will take place in the states, is included in the year. I was actually very proud of myself. I was afraid that I would just break down when he told me, but I had been expecting it so I managed to hold it together. I'm just going to try not to think about it. I mean if I dwell on the fact that he will be leaving then I will just be waisting the time that we have together. We have almost a year before he has to leave so I'm just going to enjoy it! I know it will be hard, but we will be able to get through it. I'll keep you guys updated. Love you all!!!

Training Day #1 (Nora)
Well, we did it! Sarah and I went to the Y this morning and did our 3 mile run on the treadmills. Not without a little bit of a set back though... My phone likes to stop working every once in a while. It doesn't turn off, it just stops running... the time will stop and you can't call anyone and no one can call you. So, in the "middle of the night" or so I thought, the doorbell rang at my house. I looked at my clock and it said 2:38 a.m. So, I wasn't going to answer the door because I figured someone had the wrong house or it was someone for one of my roommates. Well, it was really 5:30 and thankfully Miranda knew that I was supposed to workout with my sister this morning so she answered the door. Sarah opened my door and said "Let's go!!" I looked at my phone and figured out that it was broken... So we were about 15 minutes late but we still did it! I'm SO glad I decided to have Sarah come pick me up because I wouldn't have woken up from my alarm, obviously, if she wasn't here!
So anyway, we both ran the 3 miles on the treadmills and did really well. Sarah was kicking BUTT at the end because every minute she would increase the speed and she was cruising the last couple of minutes. It was awesome! After that, we did some abs and left because Mitch has to leave for work between 7-7:30. It took me 35-40 minutes and Sarah 40-45 minutes to run the three miles with a little walking warmup included in that. Pretty good for the first day I'd say!
After the workout I went to Schnucks and bought some healthy food... good cereal, fruits, some healthy choice deli turkey and healthy choice wheat bread and english muffins... stuff like that. Then I went to Kohls to return the shoes that me and Sarah bought last night... that brings my next topic. I was excited and telling Tyler all about the half-marathon and how excited I was. Last night, Sarah and I went to Kohls and got some REALLY nice Nike Reax running shoes. They were SO light that it felt like you weren't wearing shoes at all! It has the "shox" on the heels so that it gives you a spring in your step and everything. We were totally excited. We also went to Target and got some good running shirts and sarah got some underwear ,too! THANKS MOM!!!When I told Tyler I got Nike Reax he said, "No way, you don't want those." What?! I was so mad because we were so excited. He went on to talk about how Nike shoes may look cute and feel good at first but they won't hold up with longer distance running and I needed to get something more substantial like Saucony, Asic, or New Balance. Whatever, so I called Sarah and told her and we decided he probably knew more about good long distance running shoes than we did so we gave in. I returned the shoes this morning and I am going to order Saucony Grid Cohesion shoes from Zappos.com. Here is the link, Sarah if you want to look at these. They are what Tyler suggested because they lasted him through his marathons, training, Plebe year, and such... his favorite and best suggestion. They are $55 with free overnight shipping.. pretty good deal and cheaper than our Nikes were. Anyway, here is the link if anyone wants to look at them! I'm so excited to have this goal in mind and getting ready for it is fun too! Love you guys!

Sarah
Thanks for all the updates, Mom. Gosh that's so scary for Julie and John, but it sounds like they and especially the baby will be in good hands, the doctors' and God's! Can't wait to set a date for Florida...that's so nice of Aunt Ann to welcome us. Would the granddaughter getting married be Heidi? I was thinking they were waiting for the wedding until after the baby is born. Can't wait to get my calendar...I have nothing to write plans on for this month! Sunday for lunch is fine for us. We can eat here or go out, but Edwardsville is probably best so we can visit a little longer. Worked out this morning, and going again tomorrow. I've decided to focus on the YMCA this month, then slowly add yoga, weights, and food as I get into the groove of it all. I really want to get it right this time! Love!
Mornin' from Mom
I like that, Sarah! The only way you won't lose weight is if you give up trying. Exactly. I worked out yesterday morning, and am about to do the same this mornning. Didn't quite follow the exact plan yesterday for the 3 day diet, but almost, and I'm finding that already I don't need so much food (portion wise).
Hey! Guess what? I talked with Aunt Ann on the phone on my way home from Belleville last night. She says we're welcome to her house in Tampa. It's about an hour's drive to Orlando. Julie and John went to Philly again. The baby's cysts haven't grown, so they said they think it would be all right to deliver closer to home...it needs to be a place with a pediatric surgeon there at all times, so they chose Orlando..John's folks live there, Julie can stay with Paula if necessary before or after the baby is born. It's about 2 1/2 or 3 hours from West Palm, where they live, though. It's only about 3 weeks now before they want to deliver. It's possible ( but not probable)that the baby could have problems breathing right away, so they have to have a full team of doctors ready in case they need to do surgery right away. Otherwise, they'll be able to wait a month or two. God is faithful, though, because John's friend's mom is the head pediatric nurse at this special pediatric hospital (Winnie something), and is getting the best available doctors and nurses to take the case. She's going to make sure John and Julile can meet them very soon, etc. So, please keep them in your prayers. Brenda's baby is doing fine (16 weeks already)...due in mid-June.
THE 2008 calendars were all sent to me. They came yesterday. They're terrific! Nora says she could get together Sunday afternoon if you guys still want to meet for Dad's birthday...what about Sarah's and Justin's and Mitch's birthdays? Did you have anything or place special in mind? I could bring the calendars. Let us know. It would be O.K. with Dad. Love you all!
By the way, in the Christmas letter which Mom sent, she mentioned a granddaughter's wedding along with three more great-grandbabies due for 2008. I guess it must be Jessie, huh? I'll put the question on the Borhart post.

Sarah
Worked out when Mitch got home today...he rode with a co-worker, so he had to leave early. Same with tomorrow. Will gets his second dose of flu shot tomorrow morning, NO FUN! Good job with the diet, mom. That always works so well for you. I'm gonna weigh myself each morning I go to the Y, and just post when I lose a pound so I don't get so depressed. Gonna take it slow and give it time and try not to lose hope. As I heard the other day, "The only way you won't lose weight is if you give up trying." Love!
Mom here
Glad you are on here again girls. Sarah, I'm glad you are finding "Captivating" useful. Laura, I should have given you yours while you were here. I started my good old 3 day diet again yesterday. Already I feel better. I had just gotten so bloated. Janet and I saw "August Rush" at 4:30. Wow! No wonder I wanted to see it so badly. I just loved it. I know Dad will enjoy it if I can get him to go to see it. Janet wants to lose weight, too, so that's a good thing. They got DSL hooked up so now she'll be able to use her computer more. I admire anyone who can do a marathon. I just can't handle the stress on my knees anymore, but I need to get consistant with my workouts again. They help me physically, mentally and emotionally. I'm proud of all of you and know we'll all succeed at our goals. I've set my goal at getting down to 138 lbs. I'm ashamed to say that I went up to 156 lbs. ( That's my weigh in weight Monday. I'll weigh in every Monday morning. How are you going to monitor yourselves? Next year I've got to JUST SAY NO to all of the crazy holiday sweets. Much love to all of you. It was so great to be able to see Laura, Audrey and Anna, even if only for a short time. We enjoyed our New Year's Eve with Will and the day after with Sarah and Mitch. I don't know about this weekend. You'll need to check with Dad. I'm always game.

Sarah
Way to go, Laura! That is an awsome goal, and I know you can achieve it. And doing it with Justin makes it even more worthwhile. Just let me know if you need someone to watch the girls for long weekend runs or anything.
Got up and worked out this morning, but not without a small fight. I snoozed several times and was struggling with the decision to get out of bed, and then I heard Will start his sleep crying, which usually lasts quite a while. Now this might sound strange, but since reading "Captivating," my eyes have become opened to the spiritual attacks which Satan uses probably more than I ever thought possible. So, still halfway asleep, I thought, "He's using my son to try to get me to give up on my goal of working out this morning." Then I thought, "In Jesus' name, LEAVE HIM ALONE!" I said that in my head 3 times, and you know what, Will stopped crying, just like that. It was amazing. Then I got MAD that my son was being used against me, and you better believe I got up and worked out. So, I know that it will keep getting harder, but I also know that God is on my side helping me fight.
Do you guys want to get together this weekend to celebrate Dad's birthday? I was thinking maybe we could meet in Fairview Heights or my house and go out to eat or something. Lunchtime would be best since Nora will be working at night. Love!

Laura trying a new plan
I'm so with you, Sarah, on the motivation thing. I'm trying something drastic. Justin and I are going to train for the Spirit of Saint Louis half marathon in April. Running has always been the easiest way for me to lose weight and this gives me a concrete goal with a set training schedule. Plus it's something Justin and I can do together and motivate each other. I'm not quite sure how I'm going to fit the training into my schedule, but I guess I'll figure it out. 13.1 miles on April 9th, here I come!
I agree, we need to pray for each other. My prayer life is definitely something that I need to work on this year, too. We can do this! Love you all!

Sarah
Okay, so I'm not nearly as excited and motivated as when we started this, but it just has to be done. I'm going to work out tomorrow morning and every morning following unless really impossible. And how often is it really impossible? Pray for me, girls. Have you read "Captivating"? Is Satan at work against us to keep us from becoming and being the women God means us to be? I believe so. Of course not just in the weight department...weight just happens to be a very visible sign. So let's pray for eachother...all the time...that we will see God at our side in this fight. I love each of you so much!

New Year Advice
I copied and pasted this...thought it was good. Mom
Want to get on an exercise plan, eat healthier, or lose weight in 2008?
Great, so how are you going to make this year’s resolution stick? I’ll tell you how – with imagery – which is, by the way, very different from fantasy.
You probably have a fantasy idea of how your life will look when you: lose 20 lbs, land the perfect job, meet the guy/girl - fill in your dreams here. But do you ever truly use the power of mental imagery? Your mind is far more powerful than your body you know, and there is a movie about the new you that should be playing (in your mind) daily.Serious athletes use their minds, not just their bodies to excel. It is a well-known fact that world-class athletes see themselves where they want to be, performing the way they hope to perform, in their minds eye, to further their success. Why not harness that power and become a serious athlete yourself? You are, you know, in training for the most important event of all – your life. Look at your list of New Year’s resolutions and focus on just one for all of January. Whether it is weight loss or getting better grades in school, take five minutes every day and see yourself (I mean really indulge yourself here) living as the person you want to be.For example: if your goal is to lose 20 pounds this year, see yourself totally excited about your workouts and doing them consistently. Work through a scenario in your mind where it seems like you’ll have to miss a workout, but then you find a solution and happily get your training done, and everything else you needed to do.
Picture yourself eating healthy foods, truly enjoying them, and stopping before you are full. Make a movie in your mind every day and watch yourself trying on clothes that used to be tight but are getting looser and looser. See yourself running into old friends who are amazed at how good you look, and really try to feel the excitement of the new fit and energetic you.Your workouts will become a joy to do. As your body changes, your mind will, too – totally believing that this is the way you are supposed to be – and the process of losing weight (or whatever you are trying to accomplish) will be more efficient, more fun, and more likely to occur just the way you want it.Watch the best new movie of the year: "The New You, 2008"More (mind) power to you,Debbie Rocker
